It is with the deepest regret and sympathy, The Community Fire Company of Rising Sun, Inc. announces the passing of Life Member Russell M. Johnson. Russell M. Johnson, 87, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away December 9, 2009 at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford, PA. A lifelong resident of Rising Sun, Mr. Johnson was born on September 5, 1922, the son of the late Joseph and Ruth Brown Johnson. Following his graduation from Rising Sun High School in 1939, Russell entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theatre during the Second World War.
When he returned from active duty, he went to Goldey Beacom College and then began working at Bainbridge Naval Station as a bookkeeper and finished his career at Cecil County Public Library. He was a lifetime member of the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun and a member of American Legion Mason-Dixon Post 194 for over 60 years. Russell was a committee member of the Rising Sun High School Alumni Association and a lifetime member of Janes United Methodist Church. Russell was an avid baseball fan and umpired for the Rising Sun Little League. He is survived by a son, Dale M. Johnson and his wife Kim of Rising Sun, a daughter, Donna M. Johnson of Rising Sun, and a grandson, Christopher William Johnson. He also leaves behind two brothers, Donald R. Johnson and his wife Dorothy of Richmond, VA and Edward Johnson and his wife Nancy of Rising Sun, his nephew Paul Johnson of Nottingham, PA and his niece Valerie South of Richmond, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty D. Johnson who died in 1993. A funeral service will be held at Janes United Methodist Church, 213 N. Walnut St., Rising Sun, MD 21911 on Saturday December 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Friends and family may call at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in Brookview Cemetery.
